First month in service
After this week, most of you will have completed your first month of your service term! While getting started at your service site can be overwhelming and challenging we hope that you have had the opportunity to find growth and support like Terri Sawaski, K-3 Reading Corps Interventionist serving in Alpena.
“My first week at Sanborn Elementary has been AMAZING! Not only because of the wonderful students that I am working with, butbecause of my tutor-partner, Julie Scott, and my wonderful coach, Amy Blumenthal. This entire application and training process has been so overwhelming, but the support and encouragement from all of the AmeriCorps members has been amazing! I am learning more about myself – that I can conquer ANYTHING – and I guess that reward, in itself, has been the most satisfying at this point! As I have said many times, this is an amazing opportunity for me and I am so grateful, not only for the personal growth I am experiencing, but to watch the students grow with me!” – Terri Sawaski
Thanks, Terri, Julie and Amy for supporting each other through this first month of school and service!
Governor Service Awards
It was an incredible honor accepting an award from Governor Gretchen Whitmer at the 2019 Governor’s Service Awards, hosted at the Detroit Opera House. Michigan Education Corps joined 42 other organizations being recognized for doing amazing work across the state! As much as this award means, the biggest honor is knowing Michigan Education Corps has served over 11,000 students since 2012, and helped them become proficient in reading or math. Your service is for them and for their futures—then, now, and going forward. We are so grateful for each of you who are serving Michigan students every day. We couldn’t do it without you!
