About the program

Michigan Education Corps (MEC) Reading Corps’ aims to help every Michigan child become reading proficient by the end of third grade—a goal that we can only reach with your help. We connect interventionists, or reading tutors, for elementary students throughout Michigan to read proficiently.

As a MEC Reading Corps Interventionist, you’ll help kindergarten - third-grade students become better readers by using scripted intervention and assessment. These interventions focus on phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, and comprehension. You will see each student on your caseload for 20 minutes daily, Monday through Friday, until they reach their growth targets. Through ongoing training and coaching, we'll prepare you to meet each student's needs successfully.

MEC Reading Corps is an AmeriCorps program. MEC Reading Corps interventionists (members) commit to serving up to 1,200 hours following the school calendar. Full-time interventionists typically serve at least 37.5 hours per week, Monday through Friday, during typical school hours. Interventionists serving part-time typically serve at least 27.5 hours per week, Monday through Friday, during typical school hours.
