Pre-K PROGRAM AT A GLANCE / FOR SCHOOLS
Michigan Education Corps’ goal is to help every Michigan child become proficient by the end of third grade—a goal that we can only reach with your help.As a Michigan Education Corps tutor, you’ll work with preschool age children to provide proven research-based instruction and practice and ultimately, help struggling students reach their potential.
Here’s some additional information about the program, and what the role looks like:
What do Michigan Education Corps members do?
- MEC members are AmeriCorps members committed to serving 1,700 hours in the area of education.
- MEC members (participating through AmeriCorps) are trained to assist preschool teachers in implementing a language, literacy, and math rich learning environment.
- Members provide targeted reading skill practice, commonly called interventions, in the areas of rhyming, alliteration, letter sounds, letter names, and picture naming (vocabulary).
- All members have the opportunity to provide additional literacy services in the community.
- Members are trained in scripted evidence-based literacy interventions.
- Implement Preschool Reading Corps every day that children attend preschool.
- Provide additional interventions occur outside of the teacher-led, core reading or math instruction time during the school day.
Which students are eligible to receive services?
- Children scoring “below target” on benchmark assessments administered by the tutors.
- Students who need reading skill practice versus intensive reading instruction.Students receiving special education or English Language services are eligible on a case-by-case basis, as determined by the Internal Coach in collaboration with school staff.
MEC Members Do:
- Provide language and literacy rich supplemental instruction in preschool classrooms.
- Provide supplemental reading interventions as needed to individual or small groups (2-3) children for up to 15 minutes at a time.
- Collect benchmark data to determine which children may need language and literacy intervention.
- Utilize student assessments provided by MEC/Reading Corps.
- Receive on-going support from an Internal Coach
- Use research-based interventions with provided age and content appropriate materials
- Regularly monitor progress to inform instruction
- Serve everyday at their school for the school year, 40 hours per week (full-time)
- Come from a variety of backgrounds – recent graduates, stay-at-home parents, retirees, etc.
- Implement language and literacy activities during transitions (e.g., hallways, going to and from the bus) and meals (if applicable).
MEC Members Do Not:
- Supplant services provided by the school or site employees
- Conduct other duties that are required for school staff, e.g., lunch duty or playground duty, or other non-literacy/Reading Corps tasks throughout the school day
- Use student assessments provided by the school
- Work with very low performing students who need the help of a trained, licensed teacher
- Use other school-based interventions or create their own lesson plans
- Make their own decisions about what intervention is best for a student
- Make a guess about how a student is progressing and responding to an intervention
- Make their own decisions about an intervention change or exiting a student (coaches do this)
- Have flexibility in their schedule for when they want to show up at the school or leave for the day
- Need to have a degree in education
